A Clinical Study in 87 Surgical Cases of Intestinal Obstruction


Abstract
This study is an analysis of 87 patients with intestinal obstruction diagnosed by operation at the Department of Surgery of JeonBug National University Hospital during 3 years.from Mar, 1975 to Feb, 1978.
The following results were obtained
The male to female sex ratio was 1, 9 : 1, and frequent age group was from 21 to 30.
The common causes of intestinal. obstruction were post-operative adhesion(58.6%), intussusception (20.6%) and neoplasm(4.6 % ). These three causes represent .83.8% in this series.
By the nature of obstruction, simple mechanioal obstructions were 64 cases (73.6%) and strangulation obstructions were 23 cases (26.4%).
The cardinal symptoms were abdominal pain (81.6%4} vomiting (71,3%.) and abdominal distention¢¥(55.2%) and abnormal. peristalsis (37.9%)
On plain X-ray films of the abdomen, positive finding was present in 90.2% of 82 ,cases.
As for the operative procedures of 87 cases, 33 cases (37.9%) were treated by lysis of adhesion & bands, 23 cases (26.4%) by resection Sc primary anastomosis, and 14 cases (16.0%) by manual reduction.
The incidence of post-operative complication was 24.1% and the most frequent complication was wound infection (33.3%). Overall mortality rate was 6.8% and fluid & electrolyte imbalance was the leading cause of death.
